First Dance

This past weekend, I had the privilege of spending 29 hours in the Stringfellow Prison south of Houston, TX.  The 15 inmates and their wives were such a treat to serve.  One special couple, Anthony & Aleatha, seemed to really connect with the message and volunteers.

On Saturday we had a little free time so we offered a song for the couples to dance to.  Our pianist/vocalist sang out Unchained Melody with heart and passion.  All the couples had a great dance.

Later in our small group time Anthony & Arleatha shared that this was their First Dance.

They had been married for several years and this was the first time they had been able to dance together.  I was honored to have been a part.

I've often shared in prison that while I don't know what it's like to be incarcerated, I do know what it's like to be guilty.  Sin and legal violations can cause us to loose rights and privileges.  These losses can often times remind us of our failures.  Our "prison bars" keep our bad decisions and short comings ever in our face.

In our society, and many others around the world, this is part of the punitive purpose of prison.  In the society of mankind however we are given opportunities to value others through grace.  The grace of a First Dance.  A simple dance to remind men and women that they are more than the sum of their sins.

I thank God for the privilege to serve.  I thank God for all my First Dances.

HOPE does not disappoint

and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:5 WEB)

I spent yesterday afternoon and evening in prison … literally.  Our WVIW team began the Marriage Seminar at the Stringfellow Unit just south of Houston, TX.  We have 15 inmate couples and about a dozen team members enjoying the HOPE that the Holy Spirit brings.

Patti Suhre told her testimony as did Greg Alvis.  Betty (mom) lead worship and sang a power solo.  Even one of the inmates sang an outstanding song of "finding blessings in the thorns."

Then Johnny (dad) preached; or rather shared a few stories of men who after being incarcerated, experienced the life-changing power of Jesus, and lead remarkable lives.  HOPE.

HOPE.  That became the theme of the evening.

LIVE Broadcast from Lord's Glory Church - Humble, TX

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:14-15

Cosas de Dios (Things of God)

The last thing anyone wants on a drive to dinner with friends is a car accident.  This is especially true when you're in another country.  But that's exactly what happened to us here in Honduras.

We had dropped off our luggage at the mission house and were on our way to dinner when … BAM!  Another truck had smashed into our truck; our rented truck.

You can imagine the questions and thoughts that run through your mind.  "Is everyone ok?  How are things like this handled in Honduras?  How much will this cost?  What do we do now?"

The young man driving the other truck quickly said he would call his mother.  By the time she arrived we had determined that everyone on the team and in the other truck were fine, only the vehicles were damaged.  We were also discussing how to complete the repairs.

The mother immediately recommended taking the truck to the dealership in town for the repairs.  Since it was late at night we decided to meet at the dealership the next day.

Before we left the crash site the mother, Eva Menendez, said to me in English, "I am sorry for your trouble.".

I answered her, "Esta es un oportunidad para las cosas de Dios (This is an opportunity for the things of God)."

Turns out that Eva had worked 20 years for the Dole fruit company as an agricultural engineer and has a heart to help orphaned children.  We are planning a return trip to this city in June to work at Casa Cielo, a local orphanage lead by a fellow CFNI graduate.  When I explained our plans and invited her to join us she immediately agreed.  I believe her involvement in this project will prove to be a blessing to her and Casa Cielo.

I don't recommend recruiting team members by crashing into them but then again, whose to say what things can become things of God.

PS Eva decided to pay 100% of the replacement and repair costs and took us to a very good repair shop where the truck was repaired and we were on our way.

Casa Cielo Visit

He are just a few photos from Casa Cielo. We visited with Papa Jones last year and got to hear part of his vision for his children and how they are going to change the future of Honduras. http://travismoffitt.com/casa-de-cielo-in-honduras This time we had the honor of once again staying on the property. We love sitting and hearing the heart of these two proud parents. How they describe their family is a joy to hear. We will be coming back this summer and spending a week with them and over the next few weeks will be sharing some of their story and how you can get involved. To see and hear how these children interact with Papa and Mama Jones is a must see. The love and passion that is in their midst is heavy and makes the day bright.

"8 Leadership Keys during Transition, Crisis or Challenge"

Crisis in Chinese is represented by two symbols meaning change with opportunity.  If you allow God to develop your leadership during times of crisis, you will have no problem with transition and challenge.

For your church, organization or marketplace effort to remain relevant, viable and effective, may I suggest the following eight keys for your leadership team's consideration:

1.  Scan the Environment.  The essence of remaining relevant is having a strategy that is effective and defining the implications of current trends.  Those you lead live in the real world.  How does your leadership strategy help or hinder them with their marketplace challenges?.

2.  Revisit Your Mission, Vision and Values.  Clarity about these is leadership's number one priority.  Communicating them with frequency is number two.

3.  Ban the Hierarchy. Structure, systems and policies are management tools and should not be canonized.  People should be in strategic leadership positions for leading creative change that fulfills the vision and no other reason.

4.  Establish Zero-Based Programs.  Are present programs, events, policies and activities fulfilling our mission and vision?  Do they support our values?  If not, we need to implement planned abandonment.

5.  Employ the Power of Language.  Speak the Word of Faith and not words of doubt.  Be a hope dealer not a dream killer.  Have few but clear and consistent messages coming from the leadership team.

6.  Deploy Leadership Widely.  Flatten the flow chart and leadership pyramid.  Strategic leadership is about the future and management is about the present.  Both are vital but require different gifts.  Great leaders know the difference and deploy leaders appropriately.  Strategic leaders spend 80% of their time contributing to the future growth, health and maturity of the organization for which they are responsible.

7.  Lead From the Front.  Don't push from behind - that's motivation.  Inspire others through your behavior and passion.  Trying to inspire unmotivated team members is not only tiring, but bears little fruit.

8.  Assess Your Efforts.  Maintain well-defined Mission, Vision and Values Statements the team refers to often.  Create a Strategic Planning Process that provides direction, focus and serves as a valuable tool for setting goals, creating action plans and measuring results.

Whether you are going through an uncomfortable transition, a demanding challenge or a threatening crisis, these eight keys will give you and your team relief and confidence.  They have helped me as I have developed them through my leadership opportunities since 1966.

Food in the House

P66

Occasionally people will ask, "Why travel to Honduras to help people when there are people in need right here at home, in the USA?"

It's a good question.

International efforts come with greater expenses related to travel costs, time costs, and the impact that cross-cultural work has on your own soul. Let's just say that there is a price to be paid.

So why go? Why take the time and pay the price to travel to Honduras or any place else for that matter when the hungry, the poor, the needy live right next door?

Jesus Himself gave us a global mandate. He said GO to, "Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the outermost parts of the world," He was literally saying for us to go to our town, our country, neighboring countries and the furthest away places on the planet.

At CONNECT GLOBAL we take this mandate very serious. We were formed as a Global organization knowing that the USA is part of the globe. Because of this, we will continue to travel to Honduras AND care for people here at home.

Currently our primary efforts are based around building Aquaponic Feeding Systems. These sustainable, organic systems produce both Tilapia and fresh vegetables. They are environmentally friendly and easy to manage. Most importantly, they are virtually free to maintain and they feed people.

We completed 5 Aquaponic Feeding Systems this past September in Cusuna, Honduras.

ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17TH WE WILL BUILD OUR FIRST DOMESTIC AQUAPONIC FEEDING SYSTEM IN TAMPA, FL, USA!

Did I mention that we are super excited about this project?

This system will be built on site at New Life Baptist Church in the Sulphur Springs neighborhood of Tampa. This is a very impoverished part of Tampa, often referred to as a "Produce Desert." We are so honored to partner with this excellent church to make sure there will be Food in the House for hundreds of families.

Here's where you come in. Join us this Saturday. You can cut wood, drive a nail, or take picture. We will need help with all three. Share this story with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, or anywhere else you're connected. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter @iConnectGlobal. Watch this story unfold at iConnectGlobal.org. Make a donation to help us continue this work and build more systems that will feed more people. In what ever way you can, get CONNECTED.

New Life Baptist Church is located at 912 E. Fairbanks St., Tampa, FL 33604. We will begin at 10am. Stay all day or for just an hour.

You can mail donations to Connect Global, PO Box 740273, Dallas, TX 75374 or online at www.iConnectGlobal.org.
